Tales from the Cutting Edge
One morning we received an inquiry from one of our customers. One of their machines had broken down and they urgently needed some machined components to complete an order. There where nine turned items, ranging in quantities from a 50 off to 336 off. We had quoted for the parts by midday, they delivered material to us after lunch and later that afternoon we were in production. We can’t promise to be that slick every time, but a very fast response is one of the things we’re generally pretty good at. Running KanBan deliveries taught us how.
A second story illustrates our zest for a challenge and speed to production. Adding Value through Design.
Day 1
A new customer arrives with a family of parts. They are used to make a Gas Nozzle reducer. The problem is the six parts are slow to assemble and prone to leakage so each assembly needs testing. All of which absorbs a lot of time, as do rejects and rework.

Day 2
We proposed reducing the six parts to one single component. Thereby removing the need for assembly and eliminating any possibility of leakage. We supplied a drawing and a prototype part for evaluation and test.

Day 3
Our solution is accepted and we commenced production that day.
Customer Cost Down Benefits
Time saved on, assembly / test
One component instead of six
Shorter lead time
Final assembly has 5 less components drawings / stock bins
Reliability / Simplicity
Now we can’t pretend this was an ordinary case and it happens every day. Nor could we be sure we had the capacity to respond that quickly all the time. Mostly our customers supply drawings and we manufacture to their standard within an agreed lead time. What it does show however, is that we engage with our customers, even new ones we don’t know, as happened here. We went on to design many more parts for that customer and our relationship lasted for several years until they moved to sourcing overseas.
Can We Offer These Services to You?
Whatever your project or production need, we’re always happy to talk about it, offer advice if required and generally add value where we can.
We aim to respond or provide a Quotation, the same day enquiries or RFQ's are recieved.
Capacity
Seven Hardinge and Mazak CNC Lathes produce our turned and machined parts. They are all equiped with live tooling and "C"
axis. Maximum turned diameter is, 51mm bar or 150mm chucking. They are
all fitted with magazine barfeeds, while the tooling is monitored with Checkmate Sensors to enable secure lights out production.
Three Centreless Grinders, Cincinnati 2OM and Wickman No. 0's are used for finishing journals, bearings
etc. We can offer, SPC, PPAP's and KanBan deliveries if required.

The
illustration above shows a tool being checked on a CNC lathe. We use
Checkmate all of the time, whether running manned or unmanned. As one
of our operators put it,
“Checkmate monitoring the tooling gives you peace of mind, you know your machined parts will be okay. ”
Location
Located in Bridport, by the borders of the three counties of Dorset, Devon and Somerset, Collins Engineering is ideally placed to service the precision engineering needs of South West England.
However, if visiting us is not essential, then by using emails and overnight carriers it doesn't really matter where you are and we would be delighted to quote and machine parts for you. Just the other day we machined some stainless steel components on a three day turnaround for a super yacht in Italy.
Company Policy
Our philosophy has always centered around a personal approach which listens to the requirements of all concerned, staff and customers. Our company decisions are based on developing harmony and maintaining sustainability for the benefit of everyone involved with the company.
